P0171 FORD - Fuel Injection System Too Lean Bank 1

P0171 FORD - Fuel Injection System Too Lean Bank 1

P0171 FORD Description

The DTC code P0171 on your Ford vehicle indicates that the air / fuel ratio or mixture is not performing correctly due to a fault, either electrical or mechanical.
The ECM (Engine Control module) is responsible for calculating the compensation needed to correct the displacement between the real or theoretical mixture, in case the amount of the compensation value is extremely large the actual mixing ratio is poor, as in this case.
Note1: This Diagnostic Code is similar to P0174 and it is possible that both are presented together.
NOTE2: “Bank 1” refers to the bank of cylinders that contains cylinder #1; while “Bank 2” refers to the bank of cylinders that does not contain cylinder #1. Therefore, code P0174 does not apply to engines that do not have two banks of cylinders.

When is the P0171 code Detected?

  • Fuel injection system does not operate properly. –
  • The amount of mixture ratio compensation is too small. (The mixture ratio is too lean.)

P0171 FORD Possible Symptoms

Symptoms of this code include the following –
  • Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
  • Excessive Fuel Consumption
  • Stored trouble code and an illuminated warning light
  • Rough, or erratic idling
  • Poor performance
  • Poor gas mileage
  • Misfires on one or more cylinders
  • The engine may hesitate or stumble upon acceleration
Important NOTE #1: Take note that in some cases, one or more symptoms may only appear under certain conditions, such as when the engine is hot.

Important  NOTE #2:
Be aware that the symptoms listed here apply to vacuum leaks; other possible causes of these codes can produce similar symptoms that may vary in intensity, depending on both the nature of the problem and the application.

Repair Code P0171 Myself.?

While diagnosing and repairing these codes should not present the average DIY mechanic with undue difficulties, it should be noted that there are other possible causes of these codes, besides vacuum leaks and defective MAF sensors.

P0171 FORD POSSIBLE CAUSES

Following Problems Causes of the Code P0171 in a Ford Model
  • There may be an intake air leak.
  • The front O2 oxygen sensor may be defective.
  • Maybe there is a fault in the ignition system/Ignition misfiring
  • Some fuel injectors may be contaminated or clogged.
  • There is an escape of exhaust gas.
  • The fuel pressure may not be correct.
  • The MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor may be faulty or defective.
  • The connection of the PCV valve hose (Positive Crankcase Ventilation Valve) is incorrect.
  • Faulty fuel injectors
  • Lack of fuel
  • Incorrect Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose connection

Other possible causes of code P0171

Some Of the Other possible causes of code P0171  could include the following,
  1. · Defective PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve
  2. · Low fuel pressure due to a restricted fuel filter, defective fuel pump, defective fuel pressure regulator, or defective fuel pressure sensor(s).
  3. · Clogged, dirty, or defective fuel injectors
Note: That all of the possible causes listed Above almost certainly produce dedicated additional codes

Diagnosis Tools

  1. The global OBD-II scan tool
  2. Water bottle

 P0171 Ford Possible solutions

P0171 Ford code you can check the following components:
  1. Clean the Air Mass Flow Sensor (MAF), when installing it make sure it is completely dry, otherwise, it could be damaged.
  2. Check all the vacuum hoses and the Carter Positive Ventilation (PCV) valve.
  3. Make sure that the fuel pressure is within the corresponding levels and that the filter does not have any element that may be contaminating it.

P0171 FORD Tech notes

With the Air/Fuel Mixture Ratio Self-Learning Control, the actual mixture ratio can be brought closely to the theoretical mixture ratio based on the mixture ratio feedback signal from the heated oxygen sensors 1. The Engine Control Module (ECM) calculates the necessary compensation to correct the offset between the actual and the theoretical ratios.
In case the amount of the compensation value is extremely large (The actual mixture ratio is too lean.), the ECM judges the condition as the fuel injection system malfunction and light up the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) (2 trip detection logic).
A P0171 lean code for bank 1 is the cylinder bank on the RIGHT (passenger) side of the engine on Ford vehicles with a V6 or V8 engine and rear-wheel drive.
