P0340 DEFINITION

This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is a generic powertrain code. It is considered generic because it applies to all makes and models of vehicles (1996-newer), although specific repair steps may be slightly different depending on the model. So this engine code applies to Following Makers 
  1. Nissan
  2. Ford
  3. Toyota
  4. Chevrolet
  5. Dodge
  6. Honda
  7. GMC
And Some Other Cars Brands
This P0340 code indicates that a problem was detected in the camshaft position sensor circuit. Since it says circuit, that means the problem could lie in any part of the circuit
the sensor itself, the wiring, or the PCM. Don't just replace the CPS (camshaft position sensor) and think that will definitely fix it.

When is the P0340 code Detected?

The camshaft position sensor signal is not detected by the Engine Control Module(ECM) during the first few seconds of engine cranking

P0340 TOYOTA Possible Symptoms

Symptoms can include Following Reson:
  • Hard starting or no start
  • Rough Running / Misfiring
  • Loss of engine power
  • Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
  • Engine Stall

P0340 Code could mean one or more of the following 10 Reason has happened:
  1. a wire or connector in the circuit could be grounded/shorted/broken
  2. the PCM may have failed
  3. there exists an open circuit
  4. the crankshaft position sensor may have failed

  6. Camshaft Position Sensor harness is open or shorted
  7. Camshaft Position Sensor circuit poor electrical connection
  8. Faulty starter motor
  9. Starting system circuit
  10. Dead (Weak) battery

However Sometimes and in some models, low battery voltage or a weak starter can trigger a Camshaft Position Sensor code.
