P0340 NISSAN – Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Bank 1

What does that P0340 mean?

This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is a generic powertrain code. It is considered generic because it applies to all makes and models of vehicles (1996-newer), although specific repair steps may be slightly different depending on the model. So this engine code article applies to Nissan, Ford, Toyota, Chevrolet, Dodge, Honda, GMC, etc.
This P0340 code indicates that a problem was detected in the camshaft position sensor circuit.
Since it says circuit, that means the problem could lie in any part of the circuit –
the sensor itself, the wiring, or the PCM. Don’t just replace the CPS (camshaft position sensor) and think that will definitely fix it.
Nissan models with distributor the camshaft position sensor is part of the distributor.
There is a factory service bulletin for the following Nissan models:
2003 Nissan Altima
2004 Nissan Altima
2005 Nissan Altima
2004 Nissan Quest
2004 Nissan Maxima

When is the P0340 code Detected?


The camshaft position sensor signal is not detected by the Engine Control Module(ECM) during the first few seconds of engine cranking

P0340 NISSAN Possible Symptoms

  1. Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
  2. Lack/Loss of Power
  3. Engine Stall
  4. Hard starting or no start
  5. Rough running / misfiring

P0340 NISSAN Possible CAUSES

A code P0340 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
  1. a wire or connector in the circuit could be grounded/shorted/broken
  2. the camshaft position sensor may have failed
  3. the PCM may have failed
  4. there exists an open circuit
  5. Camshaft Position Sensor harness is open or shorted
  6. Camshaft Position Sensor circuit poor electrical connection
  7. Faulty starter motor
  8. Starting system circuitDead (Weak) battery

P0340 NISSAN Possible Solutions

With a P0340 code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:
  1. Visually inspect all the wiring and connectors in the circuit
  2. Check for continuity in the circuit wiring
  3. Check the operation (voltage) of the camshaft position sensor
  4. Replace the camshaft position sensor as required
  5. Check the crankshaft position circuit as well
  6. Replace circuit wiring and/or connectors as required
  7. Diagnose/replace the PCM as required
