P0137 – GEO – O2 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 2

What does the P0137 code mean?

P0137 is the OBD-II generic code indicating the O2 sensor for bank 1 sensor 2 is failing to increase the voltage output above .21 volts indicating excessive oxygen in the exhaust.
This code occurs when the engine control module (ECM) sees the voltage of the O2 sensor for bank 1 sensor 2 below .21 volts when the ECM has commanded the fuel to a targeted rich condition on that bank of the engine

P0137 code causes

  • The ECM detects the low voltage problem and turns on the Check Engine Light.
  • The ECM uses other O2 sensors to try and control the fuel injection with their values.
  • Exhaust leaks

P0137 code symptoms

  • The engine will run rich during the testing of the sensor for problems.
  • The Check Engine Light will be illuminated.
  • You may have exhaust leaks before or near the O2 sensor in question.

P0137 code Common Misdiagnosis

Technicians report replacement of oxygen sensors, when lean or rich engine conditions are the cause of incorrect readings, is fairly common. Replacement of the incorrect oxygen sensor is also a possibility.

P0137 Geo Description

The heated oxygen sensor 2 (HO2S), after three-way catalyst (manifold), monitors the oxygen level in the exhaust gas on each bank. For optimum catalyst operation, the air-fuel mixture (air-fuel ratio) must be maintained near the ideal stoichiometric ratio. The HO2S output voltage changes suddenly in the vicinity of the stoichiometric ratio. The Engine Control Module (ECM) adjusts the fuel injection time so that the air-fuel ratio is nearly stoichiometric. The HO2S generates a voltage between 0.1 and 0.9 V in response to oxygen in the exhaust gas. If the oxygen in the exhaust gas increases, the air-fuel ratio becomes Lean. The ECM interprets Lean when the HO2S voltage is below 0.45 V. If the oxygen in the exhaust gas decreases, the air-fuel ratio becomes Rich. The ECM interprets Rich when the HO2S voltage is above 0.45 V.
