P0700 CHRYSLER – Transaxle Control System Malfunction

P0700 mean?

Many vehicles have a control module for the automatic transmission called a transmission control module (TCM). The engine control module (ECM) communicates with the TCM to monitor the automatic transmission for faults. If the TCM detects a fault in the automatic transmission and sets a transmission related fault code, the ECM is informed of this also and sets a P0700 in the ECM memory.
This illuminates the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) to let the driver know there is a problem. If this code is present and the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is illuminated that basically means there is at least one transmission code set in the TCM’s memory. P0700 is an informational code only. It doesn’t point to a direct fault in the engine, only a general fault in the transmission. More diagnosis is necessary to identify what the transmission fault is. This requires a scan tool that will communicate with the transmission module.

P0700 code Causes

  • Faulty transmission control module
  • Transmission valve body fault
  • Shift solenoid issues
  • Open or short in the wiring harness

Symptoms of the P0700 code?

  • Check Engine Light displayed on the dashboard
  • Poor gas mileage
  • Transmission shifting problems
  • Engine stalling, running poorly, or dying

How serious is the P0700 code?

P0700 can potentially indicate larger issues with the transmission or the future of the transmission. Some serious drivability problems can come along with this code and care should be taken.
The vehicle should not be driven if it is having trouble changing gears or it is stuck in one gear as this will cause further damage and is a safety hazard on the road.

P0700 CHRYSLER Fix

When the error code P0700 is present, the only real possible solution that you can take would be getting a scan tool in order to communicate with the vehicle’s transmission control module. It is not possible to take specific measures to fix any problem because P0700 is an informative code which means that it only indicates general fault. In order to find out a direct fault, comprehensive diagnostic procedure must be done in order to find the direct fault that has caused for P0700 DTC to appear.
On that accord, the very first step towards fixing the problem would be to extract the code from the TCM. On the other hand, if the scan tool does not communicate with the transmission control module, then it is very likely that the problem is with the TCM itself. In that case, it is the TCM that has to be repaired.
